Aqeedah and the Doctrine of Tawheed

Friday, October 2, 2009

"Indeed, we praise Allah and ask for His forgiveness. We [constantly] seek His pardon and to Him we repent. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of ourselves and from our actions. Whomever Allah guides then there is none that can lead him astray; and whomever Allah leads astray then there is no guide for him. I bear witness that there is no Deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, having no partners. I further bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger."

(Allah subhana wa ta'ala sent Muhammad (SalAllahu alayhi wa salam) with the religion of Truth so that it can prevail over all other religions, even if the pagans dislike it. May Allah send peace, praise and blessings upon him, his family, companions and followers until the Day of Judgement)

"Oh You who believe! Fear Allah as he should be feared and die not except in a state of Islam [as Muslims with complete submission to Allah subhana wa ta'ala]." [Aal 'Imraan: 102]

"Oh Mankind! be dutiful to your Lord, who created you from a single soul and from him created his wife and from them both He created many men and women. And Fear Allah from whom you demand your mutual rights and do not cut the relations of the womb [kinship]. Surely, Allah is Ever an All-watcher over you." [Nisaa': 1]

"Oh You who believe! Keep your duty to Allah, Fear Him and speak always the Truth." [Ahzaab: 70]

The Meaning of Aqeedah...

"Linguistically, the word aqeedah, comes from the word al-aqd which means to be firm upon something. Aqeedah is what a person holds as his religion and being firm upon that which he holds. So we can say that aqeedah is a belief and an affirmation of something within the heart and the action upon that which is in the heart. The meaning of aqeedah in the sharee'ah is: the belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, in the Last Day and the belief in Qadr(divine decree), the good of it and the bad of it. These are the basic tenets of eemaan (faith). And if you wish, here, you may refer back to the famous hadith of Jibreel (alayhi salaam).

The Doctrine of Tawheed...

Tawheed is the firmest stronghold leading towards Muslim unity. After having been divided, Allah subhana wa ta'ala united and joined our hearts after separation. Through this doctrine of tawheed [which will be explained shortly] we became One Ummah [nation] with one belief and One purpose in Life. This is the source of the might of the Muslim Ummah and our happiness and existence are wholly dependent upon it.

"Linguistically, the word tawheed comes from the word 'wah-ada' which means to make something 'waahid,' to make something singular. Therefore, waahid is the opposite of two, three, etc. and the opposite of plurality. So essentially, waahid is something that will continue to be singular and never a partner of something else. As for the Sharee'ah definition, tawheed means to single out Allah in all forms of worship, so that you make all of your worship for Allah alone."

And Allah subhana wa ta'ala says in the Qur'an [a translation of the meaning]:

"I did not create the Jinn and Mankind except to worship me [Alone]." [Dhaariyat: 56]

He, subhana wa ta'ala, also says what means:

"So call on Allah, making the religion entirely for Him, even if the disbelievers detest it." [Ghaafir: 14]

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we must strive, with a true and sincere striving, bi'idhnillah [by the grace of Allah], to single out Allah in all our forms of worship and to abandon the worship of anything else or for the sake of anything else, whether it is to be seen by others or other than that.
